Tatovering.
-o-

Here follows an English Translation:

Tattooing
- o -

That people who is on a very low level of culture, may tattoo their skin, one can not object to. Such a way to decorate themselves, is close to these peoples' barbaric nature. But how people in civilised countries has been able to adopt this inhuman behaviour, is not easy to grasp.

One might even understand that it finds it's way into the lower levels of society, like prostitutes, pimps, etc. People who generally do not have any high spiritual standard. It is absolutely inconceivable why tattooing has also penetrated the higher classes though.

By some quirk of fate, it has become really fashionable to have the strangest figures tattooed on ones arms and legs, and the fashion has even got to the circles of aristocracy.

According to a message in the "Journal de Médecine de Paris" tattooing has become highest fashion amongst the English aristocracy and is under special protection by the Duke of York, on whose arm has been tattooed the English coat of arms, by the "famous professor William". This "operation" is honoured in the English aristocracy by the neat sum of £50. *)

The results of such a fashion may later prove to be rather unpleasant for the person who follows it. When Bernadotte had become the king of Sweden, it was often highly uncomfortable for him to read on his own arm: "Death to the Tyrants." For many a young girl or boy onto who's limbs has been inscribed a heart or a former lover's name as an indelible reminder, it is less comfortable to be reminded about bygone times. Many a young girl, who in a moment of enthusiasm has been tattooed, has later bitterly regretted that she can no longer go to a ball in short sleeves.

Luckily a method has now been found by which to remove the tattoo. According to Variot's prescription you shall on the place of the tattoo, apply a concentrated solution of tannic acid, which shall be put into the skin with needles, the same way the tattoo was done. After that, the place is swabbed with a pointed piece of lunar caustic. Under rather severe pain and considerable reddening of the skin, the skin will then expel the pigment that was inserted with the tattoo.

*) I expect 1000 Danish Kroner to equal £50 in 1896

I find the disgust funny. And I find all the talk about "this new fashion" to be funny (it even penetrates the Aristocracy!). It seems that each new generation thinks that tattooing has become the new fashion.
I think tattooing has always been fashion.

I shall have to warn against the mentioned method of removing a tattoo. For as long as people have tattooed, there has been speculation on how to get rid of tattoos. And never has a method proved to be efficient. Even the most modern methods (like laser removal) often results in scarring that is often worse than even the ugliest tattoo.

If you have a really bad tattoo, please consult a professional tattoo artist about what to do with it.
